Matsushiro / Wakaho
Being the family temple for the Sanadas, the family of Matsushiro Domain lords, the roof of the temple is decorated with one of the family emblems of the Sanadas, the Rokumonsen (six one-mon coins, traditionally give to the dead as the boat fee to cross the river that divides this world and the dead’s). It houses graves of lords of the domain as well as mausoleums of Nobuyuki and Nobuhiro. The mausoleum of Nobuyuki is an important cultural asset with sculptures of cranes on its gables, which are attributed to Jingoro Hidari. The legend tells that those cranes came to life, broke free from the gables and ate away the rice plants night after night. The paintings on the coffered ceiling are attributed to Tan-yu Kano.
