Oasaji

“Oasaji” is a Buddhist service performed by all monks in Zenkoji in the main hall of the temple, concurrently with the sunrise. It is performed everyday, literally 365 days a year. It used to be known as “Okomori Asamoude”, in which pilgrims from all over the nation would spend a night in the main hall and typically continue on to join the Oasaji service in the following morning. Since after lodging in the main hall was prohibited at the end of the Meiji era from the viewpoint of the cultural property preservation, Shukubo, or the monk’s quarters have been in charge of arranging accommodation and tour guide for pilgrims. Though Zenkoji is a non-sectarian temple, it is protected by in-precinct temples of both Tendai and Jodo sects. We therefore provide one service each in the styles of both sects at the Oasaji. The whole service takes about an hour.
