Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum Higashiyama Kaii GalleryTerm VI Age Does Not Exist in the World of Art

The annual theme for the fiscal year 2016 is "My Personal History" (Watashi no Rirekisho). "My Personal History" is a famous column published on the last page of the Nikkei newspaper where former prime ministers and prominent figures of various fields write serial articles. Kaii Higashiyama also wrote the column in 1965, when he was 57 years old. Higashiyama, who assumed the post of the board chairperson of the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten) in the same year, was reaching a ripe stage as a painter at the time. Through his "My Personal History" articles in which he reviewed his own life up to the age of 57, this year the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery will introduce the episodes and other details for each article. While Higashiyama wrote the "My Personal Story" column when he was 57 years old, he continued to work on his masterpieces energetically until his death at age 90. Term VI entitled "Age Does Not Exist in the World of Art" will exhibit the sketches for the Toshodaiji Miei-do Murals and <Li River Twilight>, both of which noted as Higashiyama's representative works of the latter half of his life, as well as his masterpiece <Forest with a White Horse> and his last work <Evening Star>.
