Bunbu Gakko was a school proposed by the 8th lord of Matsushiro Domain, Yukitsura Sanada, who advocated the importance of both the scholarship and the martial arts in 1855, and was opened by the 9th lord, Yukinori Sanada. The appearance of the building exhibits the austere atmosphere of the domain. The school is said to have provided education for advanced subjects such as the Western military science. Another characteristic of the school was the abolition of Confucianism, and the lack of Confucius’ Mausoleum thereof, which was a common attribute for other domain schools of the time.
